Welcome to New York!

WE’RE MOVING TO NEW YORK CITY!

So, now that you know where we’re going, let’s go all the way back to the beginning! In August of last year, right around the time we got engaged, Jerry decided that he was ready to take the next step in his career. As he works in tech (he’s a Data Scientist) Nashville just didn’t have as many opportunities for advancement as a bigger city would. When we started talking about other cities with more tech opportunities, our options were basically LA/San Francisco, Austin, New York, or Seattle. If you’ve been following me for a while, then you saw that we actually visited all of those areas this year (except for Austin). Fun fact: those weren’t just vacations… We were actually trying to figure out which areas we could see ourselves living!

I’m from Seattle, so we had both spent plenty of time there, and while there’s a chance we’ll end up back there eventually (my mom always says “No babies until you live closer!” lol), we wanted something different. We loved the weather in the LA area (I told him I was NOT into San Francisco because the weather isn’t my favorite, living is super expensive and the traffic sucks) but we decided that we’d prefer New York because A, we literally have talked about moving there every time we’ve visited (his family lives in New Jersey, so we take the train over to the city whenever we visit them!) and B, neither of us are huge fans of driving. So New York it was.

Since he’s spent the last 8 months or so preparing for interviews, we have known the move was coming for a while, we just didn’t know when. In September, Jerry actually spent most of the month in NYC going to interviews, which is why he was out of town so much and why I was so vague about it. lol He accepted a job mid September, which is when it got REALLY hard to keep this secret from you guys because it wasn’t just something that would happen eventually. We finally had an official date. It was happening. And it was happening fast. Much faster than either of us anticipated.

So that’s pretty much where we’re at now. We’re currently apartment hunting, which has proven to be a bit challenging and soooo expensive, but I’m sure that by the time this post is published we’ll have locked down an apartment. The goal is to find an apartment this week while Jerry is still in NYC, but who really knows! Obviously I will know much more by the time I actually publish this post, but I thought it would be fun to write the initial post now, while the news is still fresh and there are still so many unknowns! (Edit: we signed on an apartment literally the day after I wrote this post, and I plan on publishing a blog post on our apartment hunt later this week!)

I can’t wait to share more soon!

XOXO,

Olivia
