Hey friends! Hope you’re all holding up alright and aren’t getting too stir crazy! Since we’ve been stuck at home and the only person who has to see me right now is Jerry, I’ve been using this time to try to train my hair to go a bit longer between washes. I have very fine, very straight hair, so it has always gotten greasy pretty quickly, so unlike a lot of people, I can’t just dry shampoo and call it good. I also have a really bad cowlick on the back of my head, so unless I’ve washed my hair that day, I usually have to deal with that, too. After a lot of trial and error, I’ve finally figured out a hair washing schedule that works and tips to keep my hair looking good on the days in between, so I thought I’d share to help out anyone else with hair like mine!

Here are the products I’m currently using and loving!

Here’s what my current hair washing schedule looks like:

Day 1: Wash, use Moroccan Oil, either blow dry or let air dry— I usually blow dry it until it’s damp and let it air dry the rest of the way. Hit it with a tiny bit of dry shampoo before bed to absorb any oils overnight. I’ve found it really helps to dry shampoo BEFORE it looks oily at all.

Day 2: Wake up and blow dry my hair upside down for a minute or two! (I’ve been using this $14 blow dryer for 7 years now and it still works just as well as it did the day I bought it!) I’ve found that this helps keep my cowlick under control, and makes my hair look a little more “styled” than if I don’t do it. I also think that it makes the dry shampoo work a bit more effectively, I think because it gives my hair a tiny bit of volume so it’s not laying flat on my scalp all day. Then spray small sections with dry shampoo! One huge dry shampoo tip: make sure to follow the instructions and spray from a distance. I’ve found that it’s way more effective if I spray from at least 8 inches away.

Day 3: Do the exact same thing I did for day 2. I also like to use a little bit of dry conditioner on my ends on day 3 because this is when they start to feel a little bit dry and get extra tangly. I spray the conditioner, wait a minute and then brush through it. Depending on how my hair looks on day 3 I will sometimes either curl it, wear a headband, or put it half up.

Day 4: Day 4 is definitely either a half up day or a ponytail day! I follow the same steps as day 2, and then style it. Lately I’ve been opting for half up over a full ponytail because I think it looks a bit more styled and pulled together! I just ordered the scrunchies above because I think they’ll be SO cute for half up days, and there are so many different colors and patterns that you can match them to your outfit!

Other helpful tips:

Use a scalp oil before washing your hair! I’ve been loving this one! It smells good and feels a little tingly. You work it through the roots of your hair while your hair is dry, then wash it out and shampoo like normal! I’ve found that this is key to getting to day 4. It helps to break down all of the dry shampoo that I use throughout the week and makes my hair feel extra clean.

If you sweat during a workout, follow the day two steps immediately after! Hit it with a blow dryer to get the sweat away from your roots and then hit it with dry shampoo!

If you order your dry shampoo on Amazon, you can set it up to be an automatic subscription! I did this with mine and it is a game changer! I automatically get a new one right as I’m starting to run low on my old one and I never have to think about running out!

I’ve found that using the Moroccan Oil texture spray works better for keeping curls in my hair than hairspray, because it makes it bouncier and doesn’t weigh it down nearly as much. It’s usually $28, but I found it here for only $19!

Don’t be gross. Just because you’re not washing your hair doesn’t mean you shouldn’t shower. Please still shower, just throw your hair up in a bun! I know this probably goes without saying, but I thought I’d add it in anyways just to make sure everyone knows that I definitely still shower way more than once every four days. lol

Do you have any other favorite tips or products to help you go longer between washes? I’d love to hear about them!

XOXO,

Olivia
